Stepparent Adoptions

When a parent marries, they may wish for their children to be adopted by their new spouse. This is called a “stepparent adoption.” We can help.

You can complete this without an agency by obtaining the forms from the Court in your county: There are two steps to a simple stepparent adoption.

  • Gaining the cooperation of the child’s other parent and preparing relinquishment of rights papers for that parent
  • Petitioning the Court for the approval of the adoption

In some cases where the court has concerns or where the family needs help contacting the other parent, you may wish to have an adoption agency involved. Or, if you would like us to help you through the process, we would be glad to help.

We understand that most families seeking a stepparent adoption are not in a position to pay large fees. To help families seeking a stepparent adoption, we have adjusted our fees so that families with low incomes only pay half of our normal fee—the rest is supplemented by funds from our Foundation. This fee will be much less than what an attorney normally charges for similar work.
